Cam Martin presents – Neil Armstrong ‘Before the Fireworks’

The talk title comes from his 60 Minutes interview from 2005 with Ed Bradley.

“We all like to be recognized, not for one piece of fireworks, but for the ledger of our daily work.” – Neil Armstrong

Neil A. Armstrong became legendary because of his role as an astronaut on the successful Apollo 11 mission. Less well known is his work for the NACA and NASA as an experimental test pilot from 1955 to 1962. He joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in 1955. Later that year, he transferred to the NACA’s High-Speed Flight Station (today, NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center) at Edwards Air Force Base in California as an aeronautical research scientist and then as a pilot, a position he held until becoming an astronaut in 1962. This presentation outlines Armstrong’s work from 1955 through 1962 piloting many aircraft including the X-1B, the X-5, and the X-15, providing a more comprehensive understanding of his professional contributions in the flight research community.
