Our regional colleges and universities continue to meet the needs of our resident, the workforce and our employers with training and education programs for the skills and vocations of our 21st century.

Bolstered by additional revenue and expansion of its Lancaster and Palmdale sites, Antelope Valley College enters 2016 poised for growth.

The comprehensive community college site in Lancaster continues to focus significant resources into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, including the opening of a 105,085-square-foot Health and Sciences Building that rivals those of any university. The $52 million Health and Sciences Building includes state-of-the-art laboratories that serve such programs as radiologic technology, registered nursing, respiratory care, anthropology, astronomy, biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences and physics. The Health Sciences lab space on the second floor resembles a hospital, including a 2,000-square-foot surgery demonstration lab.

Students have access to the colleges first Virtual Science Lab (planetarium), a telescope observation deck, and a Subway restaurant that provides students convenient access to food  an important factor in the northerly expansion of the campus.The approximate capacity of the building at any given time is 1,370 people, with a daily maximum traffic volume of approximately 6,800 people.

Antelope Valley College and Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest have partnered with California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to support CSULB’s offering of bachelor degree programs in mechanical and electrical engineering in the Antelope Valley,  part of a significant local effort to produce more homegrown engineers for the local aerospace industry.The three education institutions have created a seamless pathway for students to attain engineering degrees with students completing their lower division requirements at the community colleges and then transferring to CSULB’s local program. Antelope Valley College has obtained a federal grant to develop a STEM Center of Excellence at its Palmdale Center, 1529 E. Palmdale Blvd.

AVC also hosts an Early College High School program, Students on the Academic Rise (SOAR) High School  whose students have among the highest achievement scores in California  and California State University, Bakersfield-Antelope Valley, which offers bachelors and masters degree programs at AVCs Lancaster campus. AVC offers a wide variety of career and technical education programs to serve the diverse needs of the region’s workforce.

THE AERO INSTITUTE

The AERO Institute, located in the Palmdale Civic Center is a unique partnership between NASA Dryden Fight Research Center, NASA Ames Research Center, and the City of Palmdale. The AERO Institute works in close association with the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program to further leverage the publicsinvestment in Higher Education.

The AERO Institute provides comprehensive technical, undergraduate and graduate education; conducts leading edge aerospace research, incubates, stimulates and commercializes new intellectual property; promotes aerospace science and engineering; and supports Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education at every level, including a new partnership with the Palmdale School District in opening the new Palmdale Aerospace Academy an independent charter school serving grades K12.

Through a partnership with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics the AERO Institute has expanded the offerings of continuing education and standalone courses for aerospace professionals.

Developed for the study of aerospace engineering and design, the Institute hosts some of the most prestigious universities in the nation, including Purdue University College of Engineering; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering; University of California-San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering; California Institute of Technology (CALTECH); Pepperdine University’s Business School and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The AERO Institute is focused on providing leading edge technology infrastructure in telecommunications, wireless access, and digital broadcasting, serving as a technology demonstrator to both the onsite and the distance educational communities. In addition, the AERO Institute has been further enhanced with Lockheed Martin Corporation joining as an industry partner to support the development of advanced technology labs for the study of nanotechnology applications for aerospace materials.

The AERO Institute also offers teachers workshops and materials for education in grades kindergarten through 12 and is home to NASA Aerospace exploratorium, a hands-on science exhibit.

In 2015, AVC awarded a record-setting 2,283 degrees and certificates. The Lancaster campus is home to SOAR High School, which serves approximately 400 ninth through twelfth grade students who concurrently take high school classes and college-level classes. In 2016, AVC will begin offering bachelor’s program in Airframe Manufacturing Technology, specifically designed for the needs of local aerospace industry employees.
Antelope Valley College had an unprecedented headcount of 18,854 students enrolled for the 2014-2015 academic year. The most popular declared majors were: Administration of Justice, Business Administration, Registered Nursing, and Social & Behavioral Science. The college awarded 1,475 associate degrees and 727 certificates—a 19% increase over 2013-2014.
AVC led the state in Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) services for 2014-2015. Students completed 10,882 orientations, 7,010 assessments and 6,014 abbreviated student education plans for the year. Additionally, counseling created comprehensive education plans with 61% of AVC students (10,603), compared to a state average of only 20.7%.
In 2015, AVC expanded its commitment to serving the STEM education needs of the greater Antelope Valley. In January, the Chancellor’s office announced AVC as one of 15 pilot bachelor’s degree programs in the state. In March, LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich presented the on campus preschool with a grant for $200,000 to support cutting-edge preschool curriculum in STEM subjects, augmenting materials and program facilities.
